Every word that a kid drops into his vocabulary bank counts a lot. The more words the kid saves, the richer his vocabulary gets.
Learning new words can be challenging but who says it can't be fun?
Here are some fun ways on how to help our kids learn more words!
o Play word games or board games.
Word games will have your kids learn and use new vocabulary without even realizing it. There are so many games to choose from - I Spy, Hangman, Name Game, Scrabble, Boggle, Pictionary, etc. With playing, learning is faster and more exciting.
o Print out some Crossword Puzzles and Word Search.
Crossword puzzles and word search aren’t just good ways to improve your kid’s processing speed or help keep your child quiet and calm for several minutes. This will also help them recognize words and boost their vocabulary.
o Make a Word Wall.
Stick a manila paper or cartolina on the wall. Put some words on it or you can let your kids write down new words on it. A word wall is a display of collection of words and with this, kids can have a visual reminder of vocabulary which they can use in their daily activities.
o Make a Word Web.
Draw a circle and write a word in it. Let your kid connect or associate as many words as he can. With the word web, you help your kids gain a deeper understanding of new words. This will also allow them to come up with synonyms, antonyms and use word association.
o Storytelling.
Kids love stories. With the use of story books, you bring
your kid to wonderful places and help enhance their imagination and creativity.
With stories, you also introduce new words and help expand their vocabulary
bank. The more stories your kids read, listen, or watch, the more they get
exposed with new words!
o Mix art and vocabulary.
Some kids can express more through drawing or painting. If your kids love art more, you can mix this with storytelling. Let your kids draw or paint animals, flowers, people or make-believe creatures and let them make stories. Help them use new words. This way they will enjoy vocabulary more by mixing it with something they love!
Aside from increasing their vocabulary bank, kids will also learn to love words because of these fun activities!
They will also gain more confidence in using them in school or in their day to day activities!
