Why Do Our Kids Need to Smile?

Medical experts say that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile. When you frown, it takes 43 muscles to do it, but with a smile, only 17 muscles are used. Just imagine all the muscle activity and the facial tension in frowning!

According to Roger G, Axtell, smile is the ultimate gesture that carries certain welcome characteristics unlike any other single gesture.

Smile is also known to be one of the best non-verbal cues. In the social and cultural context, smile can convey happiness, acceptance, friendliness, and approval.

Dr. Fernando Marmolejo-Ramos, a lead researcher and human and artificial cognition expert, said that forcing the self to smile can stimulate the amygdala or the emotional center of the brain and then the amygdala releases neurotransmitters and promote a more positive emotional state.

Here are more reasons why our kids needs to smile:

Smile can also....

        ðŸ˜Š Release happy hormones

        ðŸ˜Š Boost the mood

        ðŸ˜Š Reduce stress

        ðŸ˜Š Relieve pain

        ðŸ˜Š Increase endurance

        ðŸ˜Š Boost the immune system

It is quite important to encourage our kids to smile often. We have to constantly remind them what the smile can mean to them and also to others.

Of course, the first step in motivating our kids to smile often would be smiling to our kids more often. It is quite amazing how our kids can mirror our actions. The more we smile at them, the more they smile to others as well.

When we teach the magic words - Please, Thank you, Welcome, or May I, remind them to smile.

We also have show to our kids the art of gratitude. When we teach our kids to learn to appreciate the simple things and simple joys in life, it will be easier for them to smile!

Always motivate your kids to choose to stretch those lips and SMILE! 😊
